SON BOU- MILES OF GOLDEN SAND AND SHALLOW WATERS 🏖️🌞

SON BOU again on the south coast of Menorca and in the municipality of Alaior is the longest beach in Menorca with beautiful white sand and gorgeous crystal-clear water.

It is set in front of large sand dunes and a significant marsh area (PRAT DE SON BOU) second in size to s’albufera des Grau and also part of the CAMÍ DE CAVALLS trail (you can walk to/from Santo Tomás but it is probably better out of the summer season as there is little shade) we have the perfect TREKKING CARRIER to help you explore.

On a calm day it is serene and perfect for paddling/ swimming with the little ones but again always best to check the SAFETY FLAGS and there are some rocks which on a choppier day make it harder to see. There are beds, pedalos and more to hire in the summer, with beach bars and lifeguards too. We have the perfect BEACH TENT for your little ones. There have also been large inflatable play areas in the sea, a banana boat and even a massage tent on the beach in previous years.

There is a car park and boardwalk access to the beach from the car park, making it perfect to use our LIGHTWEIGHT STROLLER which is easy to carry and compact when folded up. It does get very busy in the summer both in the car park and on the beach particularly the end by the carpark boardwalk, if you are happy to walk a bit further along to the right nearer to the lifeguard tower there is usually more space. There is also access to the beach behind the road where the hotels including the ROYAL SON BOU family club are, with some on road parking but again it is busy in the summer.

At the eastern end of the beach you can see ruins of a Paleochristian Basilica from the 5th century. The beach is set within the urbanisation of Son Bou and close to SANT JAUME DE LA MEDITERRÀNIA and TORRE SOLÍ NOU with hotels, apartments, villas, restaurants, bars, shops and supermarkets and again another favourite of ours in and out of the summer season.

CALA GALDANA: THE PERFECT BLEND OF NATURAL BEAUTY AND RESORT AMENITIES 🍦🐚

CALA GALDANA is another spot we like to visit in and out of the summer season. A pretty horseshoe-shaped bay surrounded by pines and limestone cliffs with beautiful views, it is situated in the Adjuntament of Ferreries.

It is a very POPULAR RESORT FOR FAMILIES and has hotels and other accommodation conveniently at beach level within a short walking distance and others situated higher up the cliffs offering spectacular views.

The water is typically calm and shallow, so your children can SAFELY SPLASH around. To make your beach day even easier, why not rent one of our BABY SWIM VESTS and save the space in your suitcase.

There are many facilities on the beach as well as nearby shops and restaurants (Check out TOBOGÁN which has water slides and mini-golf) making it perfect for little ones. There is a carpark nearby to the beach just a short walk over a small bridge crossing the Algendar stream. 

It is near popular walking trails and stunning virgin beaches such as CALA MACARELLA and CALA MITJANA. There is also a garden centre called TRUVI just outside Cala Galdana with a free indoor soft play and playpark area. It can be quite hot in the height of summer, but it is a lovely garden centre and perhaps on a slightly less perfect beach weather day, somewhere to keep the kids entertained whilst you browse.  

CALA EN BLANES: TROPICAL VIBES AND PERFECT PICNIC SHADE 🌴🌞

CALA EN BLANES is an urban beach in the Adjuntament of Ciutadella. It is a small bay with lots of palm trees for shade near the back. It has a couple of beach bars and hotels/accommodation right on and by the beach and others close by (particularly in the LOS DELFINES area).

It has sunbed and other facilities during the summer season. There is limited PARKING NEARBY and it is busy in the summer, but it has shallow calm waters making it perfect for little ones especially using our BABY INFLATABLE SEAT.

We have enjoyed barbecues off-season in the PICNIC AREA as they have picnic tables and bbq facilities (it is important to note in high season usually May- October, lighting fires is PROHIBITED due to fire risks). 

There is also a "PIRATE SHIP" PLAY AREA on the beach for kids. HOPI BEACH BAR which was situated near the play area has now moved locations to another great cove CALA SANTANDRIA. There is also a popular coastal walk, part of the CAMÍ DE CAVALLS from CALA EN BLANES to PONT D’EN GILL, a stunning natural limestone bridge that offers spectacular sunset views. 

CALA TIRANT- DISCOVER THE RUGGED NATURAL BEAUTY OF CALA TIRANT 🏝️🐟

CALA TIRANT in PLAYAS DE FORNELLS/PLATGES DE FORNELLS is situated in the north of the island, a left turning before you reach the picturesque bay of Fornells. It has some on road parking/parking bays near the smaller beach by the FERGUS CLUB CAREMA SPLASH HOTEL (also with a tiny little bay to the right of this beach) which is easier to access for children. There are sunbed and lifeguard facilities as well as pedalo, kayak etc hire facilities.

PLAYA FORNELLS- the resort- has supermarkets, restaurants, hotels/aparthotels within a short distance of the beach and has the FERGUS CLUB CAREMA SPLASH PARK too. You can access the other part of the beach, which is separated by rocks from the smaller bay (which also has sunbed facilities in peak season) via steps on the beach.

The other side of Cala Tirant is a larger bay but the steps access can be tricky with smaller children, why not hire one of our BABY CARRIERS to help with the walk. You can also drive to and access that part of Cala Tirant beach via the other side (the road leading to it and the beach bar XIRINGUITO TIRANT is a bit bumpy). The larger part of the beach is set in front of sand dunes and wetland where you can often see terrapins from the bridge there.

It a beautiful beach typical of the north with slightly coarser sand than the south coast and it can be subject to the north wind/the TRAMUNTANA so again CHECK ANY SAFETY FLAGS as it can have very large waves on windy days, more suitable for surfers than swimming! On a calm day however, the shallow water is perfect for kids. It is part of the CAMÍ DE CAVALLS trail and is close to the CAP DE CAVALLERIA, a stunning lighthouse in the northern most point of Menorca. 

There are so many others to explore such as CALA BLANCA, CALA EN BOSCH, BINIBECA, CALA MESQUIDA, CALA EN PORTER, ALCALFAR, BINISSAFÚLLER and so many others with some other beaches where access may be a little longer to reach but are stunning.

ARENAL D’EN CASTELL- DISCOVER THE FAMILY-FRIENDLY CHARM OF ARENAL ​
Another favourite of ours in the resort of Arenal in the north of the island and a feature of another blog post menorca-child-friendly-beaches-arenal-den-castell.html ​

NA MACARET: A PEACEFUL ESCAPE WITH CALM AND SHELTERED WATERS 🛶

NA MACARET In the north of the island also and just a few minutes’ drive from ARENAL D’EN CASTELL and the PORT D’ ADDAIA  is a picturesque bay in the village of Macaret.

It is very small and DOES NOT HAVE FACILITIES on the beach but has restaurants open in the summer situated just behind the small carpark. It is often frequented by locals and is again a beautiful, calm bay perfect for little ones.

There is a SMALL PLAYPARK a few minutes’ walk away, why not use one of our STROLLERS OR PRAMS to walk around and appreciate the beauty of Macaret. If you drive to the vantage point in ADDAIA, there is a newly refurbished PLAYPARK there too with beautiful views overlooking the bay of Macaret and out to sea. You can even head to the Port of Addaia for a drink and ice cream for the little ones at LA CANTINA. 

PUNTA PRIMA: STUNNING TURQUOISE WATERS AND LIGHTHOUSE VIEWS 🏖️🐚

PUNTA PRIMA is in the south of the island close to SANT LLUÍS  and just over 15 minutes’ drive from MAHÓN. It is set within the urbanisation of Punta Prima itself, a resort with hotels, villas, apartments, restaurants (including some right on the beach) and supermarkets.

There is also a great PLAYPARK close to the carpark, opposite the beach, both for older kids and a smaller playpark for younger children. For older children why not hire one of our SCOOTERS for them to explore along the promenade. 

The sand is a beautiful fine white sand with turquoise waters. On a calm day it is perfect for little ones, the CURRENT CAN BE STRONG on a windier day. There are lifeguard services, facilities and sunbeds for hire during the summer.

The ILLA D L’AIRE LIGHTHOUSE, the tallest lighthouse of Menorca (although technically not on Menorca as it is situated on an uninhabited island) is visible from Punta Prima beach and is the home of the famous black lizard called la sargantana negra. It does get very busy in the summer but is a great beach/resort to visit with kids. 

ARENAL SON SAURA SON PARC- WIDE GOLDEN SANDS AND THE PERFECT FAMILY DAY OUT 🏖️😎

Also known as SON SAURA DEL NORD or SON PARC BEACH, it is close to the SON PARC URBANISATION  in the North of the island with some aparthotels (some overlooking the beach), villas, restaurants and supermarkets.

There is a car park and a restaurant right on the beach too; XIRINGUITO ES POP. In the summer there are facilities, lifeguards and beds/parasols as well as pedalos and other items for hire (the car parking area is a bit bumpy so be careful especially if in a hire car).

It is a great beach for kids, a good size with lots of lovely fine sand. It is also shallow for quite a way—usually getting deeper before you reach the sand dunes, where the water becomes shallow again. Because the sea stays so calm and gentle in these sections, it is the perfect spot for your little ones to enjoy their first sea dip in one of our SECURE BABY SWIM VESTS or SWIM FLOATS.

The wide, open expanse of the beach means there is plenty of room to set up one of our UV-PROTECTED BEACH TENTS, ensuring your family has a cool, shaded base for a full day of sun-safe fun. Whether you are splashing in the sea or relaxing on the golden sand, we have the gear to make your day at SON PARC completely stress-free.

Menorca has an abundance of beautiful beaches & coves to explore, with some of the island hosting white sandy beaches and gorgeous turquoise waters whilst other beaches have distinctive red sand and rocky cliffs surrounding them. There are beaches that are only accessible via boat or a considerable hike. Menorca is so unspoilt and with plentiful beaches it is one of the main attractions to the island.

There are many beaches that are perfect for all of the family and are child friendly. Just one of our favourites is Arenal d’en Castell, which is the subject of our Blog today. Arenal d'en Castell is a beautiful bay in the north of the island.
It is no surprise the beach has been awarded the European blue flag with beautiful crystal clear waters and gorgeous soft white sand. Its boardwalk from one end of the beach to the other means you can avoid dragging a buggy or child's beach toys along the sand to find your prized spot on the beach.

There are lifeguards in the summer to ensure the safety of those enjoying the sea. Whilst mainly calm and serene, on windier days there have been impressive waves and beware you could lose your bikini and dignity as the writer of this blog can testify. You will often see people anchoring their boats and swimming in the alluring blue sea and people snorkelling by the rocks. The beach during the height of summer has pedalos, sun-beds and umbrellas to hire. For the children it could be useful to hire one of our uv beach tents to keep them shaded and cool.

There are restaurants overlooking the beach which are perfect to enjoy dinner whilst watching the sunset or enjoy some refreshments after basking in the sun. Nearer the Punta Grossa side there is a carpark, just a short walk of the beach near hotels one of which has steps directly leading to the seafront. At the other end there are a few spaces to park or to be dropped off allowing easy access to the beach.

Just up the hill there is the resort of Arenal de'n Castell with hotels, apartments, shops, further restaurants and bars to enjoy as well as a breathtaking Mirador/ viewpoint of the bay. There are steps that take you from the beach up to some of these including a supermarket, shop and restaurants, although these steps are better attempted without a pushchair where access via the hill would be better. Our more compact umbrella pushchair would be ideal for this.

A short walk from there is the resort of Coves Noves with souvenir shops, a children's play area, restaurants, bars, further hotels, one of which has a small water park. Arenal D'en Castell is hugely popular with families visiting Menorca and it is so easy to see why.
